The story of Boomer, the harrier
Boomer (short for boomerang) - affectionately named because he just keeps coming back. This is an Australasian Harrier that was brought in from the wild at a young age. Incredibly underweight, he was picked up from Lake Ohakuri, about half way between Rotorua and Taupo. Rehabilitated at Wingspan, Boomer was in great condition upon release into the wild and flew off well, with high hopes for his survival.
Sadly only a few days later he was picked up from the middle of the road by Heidi not far from Wingspan, after being clipped by a motorbike. This time with some external injuries, as well as a shortage of food and energy.
Boomer is now an excellent ambassador for his kind. He has a few co-ordination issues, but does enjoy a free-flight around the Wingspan grounds from time to time, and loves entertaining visitors and members alike, while he enjoys his lunch - often on the glove and occasionally on the wing. Make sure you keep an eye out for him on your next visit to Wingspan.
